The Foreign Minister’s Thoughts on Immigration

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Jorge CastaƱeda, foreign minister of Mexico from 2000 until 2003 writes in the Los Angeles Times Online Newspaper: Mexican immigration does have distinctive traits that do make difficult, if not impossible, the automatic assimilation that characterized previous waves of immigration. This is not a question of lack of will; it is a matter of history. That is why the United States must make a major effort to construct a new type of assimilation that is both voluntary and effective. The legalization of Mexican workers and their families, a constant and energetic battle to fight discrimination against Mexicans and a concerted effort to ease the road to citizenship are some of the essential features of such an effort. Samuel Huntington, a Harvard political science professor, has made the claim that the United States is threatened because of the masses of Mexican immigrants are not assimilating into mainstream American society. Orange County Latinos, predominantly of Mexican stock are at ground zero fof this debate. There are of course, also some workers trends and employment issues. For more employment news and worker related headlines this is en excellent resource overall.

Tyson asks for Mourning Time

Friday, May 29th, 2009

The passing away of former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson’s 4 year-old daughter in a horrible accident while playing at her house adds a very sad footnote to his already troubled life.
As it stands, she passed away at a hospital Tuesday following being on life support since she was injured several days ago in Phoenix, Arizona. It seems that she has either slipped and fell or had some other type of similiar accident. All in all, Tyson came to the state after his daughter was badly injured and was seen going into the hospital. The modest house where his daughter was in contrasts sharply with the opulent and luxurious lifestyle he had throughout most his turbulent and sometimes chaotic years on the tarmac. Incidentially if you require a New York City accident lawyer then please take a peak at the law Offices of Geller & Siegel. The are absolutely the best New York City accident lawyer you will find there.
During only a 2 year span at the height of his career, he made over a hundred million dollars, but filed for Bankruptcy in the United States Bankruptcy Court some years prior.
He started the sport in an institution for juvenile delinquents in New York around the age of twelve. Around eight years after that he became the youngest heavyweight champion of all time when he knocked out Trevor Berbick. He was then beaten by James “Buster” Douglas
in a major upset. Not too long thereafter he was convicted of raping a beauty pageant contestant in Indiana, an offense for which he served 3 years behind bars. And just several years after that, he did 3 months in the slammer for assaulting 2 individuals following a relatively minor fender bender. His lawyer recently claimed that he did the best he could, considering his background. According to an article reported in the AP online news network, while his kids lived in their modest neighborhood, he himself bought a separate designer house in a wealthy Phoenix suburb for more than two million dollars. Then 2 years ago, he spent twenty-four hours in Maricopa County’s “Tent City” jail after a conviction for cocaine possession plus a count of dui.
According to the published police report, he stated that he bought cocaine “whenever I can get my hands on it.”
