Of of the major classics to be identified with the island of Kauai, one of the most prominent was the 1964 production ‘South Pacific’ which coined the phrase ‘Bali Hai’ often used in the real estate scene when naming various developments and so forth.
It was filmed partially at the scenic Lumahai beach plus Kilauea town. along with the 60’s production ‘Blue Hawaii’ starring Elvis Presley, which was filmed partially at the scenic Hanalei Bay resort area on the north shore of Kauai and near the Wailua river over on the Eastern shore.
He stayed at the ‘Coco Palms’ resort in kapp which still stands today despite being heavily damaged in a recent hurricane. There is some of the best real estate in the world in that area, in my opinion.
The monster flick’King Kong’ (both the original and 1985 version starring Jessica Lange and Jeff Bridges) was also filmed here also. You may also remember the 1992 dark comedy ‘Honeymoon in Vegas’ which headlined Nick Cage, Sarah Jessica Parker and James Caan. That one was filmed mainly
in Kapaa. and Hanalei. Other movies which have been filmed on Kauai include the dark comedy ‘Throw Momma from the Train’ starring Danny Devito, the kids and parents Rob Reiner comedy ‘North’ starring Bruce Willis and Dan Ackroyd, the 2002 adventure movie ‘Captain Nemo’, the Branden Fraser headlined live action cartoon ‘George of the Jungle’ filmed near Anahola, the world War 2 drama ‘Dragonfly’ starring Kevin Costner was filmed in Princeville and the 2003 action flick ‘Tears of the Sun’ headlined by Bruce Willis.
Other movies include the Peter Pan inspired 1992 pirates adventure tale ‘Hook’ starring Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman and Julia Roberts, the 1998 romance film ‘Six Days and seven Nights’ starring Harrison Ford and Anne Heche, the 60’s adventure film ‘Planet of the Apes starring Charlton Heston as well as the 1995 big budget disaster movie ‘Outbreak’ which starred Dustin Hoffman, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Donald Sutherland, among others in an ensemble cast. And let us not forget the recent war comedy blockbuster ‘Tropic Thunder’ which starred ben Stiller (who also lives on the island) plus Tom Cruise and ‘Iron Man’ star Robert Downey Jr….By the way if you are visiting the island and want to browse Kauai real estate then Sleeping Giant Realty may be just the firm for you. Many of the major stars of the last century have made films here like John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Jack Lemmon, Howard Keel, Dorothy Lamour, Robert Stack, James Garner and also Kathleen Turner. Mostly known for it’s movie locations, Kauai has also been the setting for several tv shows as well.
